Researching Human Subjects: Interviews, Focus Groups, and Observation Research

After reading this chapter, you should be able to:

  • identify qualitative data collection approaches used for human subject research in political science, and describe the commonalities amongst these approaches;
  • identify what types of questions are most appropriate for interview and focus group research and distinguish between the research processes of each;
  • explain what observation research is and how it is used in political science research; and
  • critically assess research that uses human subject qualitative data.
