  • Be able to list and describe the three conditions for autonomous action.
  • Distinguish between different forms of consent, and understand the limitations of each.
  • Understand the definition of competence, and describe the standards for determining whether a patient is competent to make medical decisions.
  • Define “informed consent” and list the elements that are necessary for it.
  • List and describe three “standards for disclosure,” and understand the justification for, and limitations of, intentional nondisclosure.
  • Delineate between standards of decision-making for nonautonomous patients.
