  1. Do you think respect is as necessary for social survival as, say, nutritious food?
  1. Can you think of two statuses that a person could hold simultaneously, one that commands a lot of respect and another that commands very little?
  1. Why does it take such a long time for the popular representation of certain groups to change? Can you think of a time when it changed rapidly? Why was that the case?
  1. Have you ever experienced disrespect or “othering” first-hand? Reflect on your reaction to that experience and compare it to some of the examples in the chapter.
