The Art Song Project (http://theartsongproject.com/) explores art songs in various languages from composers both well known and obscure. This site combines poetic texts, in original languages and English translation, with visual art and excellent recordings. There is a special emphasis on 21st-century art song and art song by female composers, both often neglected in the standard literature on art song.

 

Mriza: Story of Fado (clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnemFZgPAOw) examines the current state and historical significance of fado, a form of traditional Portuguese song. This traditional song form strongly connects to Portuguese nationalism, and the musical language of fado interacts strongly with the various poetic texts, forming strong relationships between spoken word and musical sound. Looking at world music genres such as fado allows listeners to take principles of music–text interaction and apply them to non-Western genres as well as art and popular music in the Western world.

 

Poetry of Rock and Roll (http://kuow.org/post/poetry-rock-and-roll) The White Review interviews author Paul Muldoon about his book Word on the Street: Rock Lyrics. This article explores the poetry of rock and roll, its musical significance, and the important element texts play in making rock music. Peppered with listening examples from various rock genres, this article is a great primer for the music–text connections in rock music and how these texts are inexpressible without the musical language.
