Eating Disorders

This chapter underscores the complex and multidimensional nature of eating disorders. It outlines and explains the different forms of eating disorders, and analyzes the biological, psychosocial and social factors that patterns how such disorders are experienced, expressed, and manifested. The role of the media and social movements in impacting body image experiences are also discussed.

While acknowledging the impact of broader social forces in shaping the development and treatment of eating disorders, the chapter also emphasizes the role of agency and the development of a positive sense of self in the recovery process.

The chapter makes it clear that any attempt to understand eating disorders must look beyond biomedical explanations to consider broader social structures (and forces), as well as individual agency.
