Assessing Country Attractiveness

Assessing Country Attractiveness—Investing in Africa?

Africa is often considered as ‘destined for underdevelopment’ (see Counterpoint Box 6.2 on page 204). As pointed out in the Counterpoint Box, McKinsey is optimistic about African prospects. INSEAD is also optimistic about African prospects (see articles below), with China exerting a big influence.

Select four African countries, one from each of the groups below, and one of the industry sectors:

  1. Egypt, Morocco, South Africa, and Tunisia;
  2. Algeria, Angola, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Libya, and Nigeria;
  3. Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia;
  4. the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Mali, and Sierra Leone.

Industry sectors:

  • Business services
  • Chemicals
  • Footwear
  • Construction
  • Creative and Media
  • Education and Training
  • Energy
  • Environment and Water
  • Financial services
  • Food and Drink
  • Giftware
  • Household goods

 For the industry sector you have chosen:

  • Compare the 4 countries by assessing their general business environment (see p. 199).
  • Assess the risk of doing business in each of the countries (see p. 205).
  • Assess the market potential in each country (see p. 203).
  • Use a country attractiveness grid to compare your results (see p. 210).
