Naturenet: www.naturenet.net
An excellent general starting point for web research with comprehensive links to numerous official (and unofficial) sites, as well as brief information about countryside law.
Natural England: www.naturalengland.org.uk
Countryside Council for Wales: http://naturalresourceswales.gov.uk
Scottish Natural Heritage: www.snh.org.uk
Central government: https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/department-for-environment-food-rural-affairs; www.scotland.gov.uk and http://wales.gov.uk
In terms of official policy and information the main starting points are the national countryside agencies and central government. The websites of the national agencies usually contain reports to government on the state of the countryside, and now have postcode searching to establish whether land is within an agri-environmental scheme etc.
