Living Graph: Explore Reproductive Value

We will use the life table for Phlox (Table 8.4) as the starting point for our analysis. The model calculates the value of Vx at each age from the value of lx in the life table and plots it as a function of age. Explore the ways that the values of bx and lx affect the graph with the following exercises. After each, examine the change in the values of Vx and the nature of the Vx curves.

  1. Increase or decrease the overall reproductive output at each age
  2. Change the pattern of reproductive output over the course of the lifespan
  3. Increase or decrease the survival at each age

The graph plots reproductive value from 0 to 0.601, versus age in days from 0 to 362. 0 to 299, 0; 306 to 313, 0.12; 320 to 327, 0.407; 341 to 348, 0.603; 355 to 362, 0. All values are estimated.
