Introduction

The growth rate of a population changes over time and, importantly, with the size of the population. A population that is small relative to its resources or carrying capacity, may grow exponentially for a time. However, no population grows indefinitely. Ultimately some internal or external factor slows the growth of the population. Density-dependent factors, those whose effect changes with density, are most likely to affect population growth in these ways.

Learning Goals

After reading your text and completing this exercise, you should be able to:

  • Explain the variables in the logistic equation.
  • Understand how and why the population growth rate changes over time.
  • Understand how and why the population growth rate changes with density.
