Introduction

Our senses take in far more information than our attentional system can deal with at any given time. The information waiting for selection for further processing is often referred to as iconic memory or sensory memory. Two questions that often come up when regarding iconic memory are how much information can it hold, and for how long is that information available? The Sperling (1960) partial report paradigm provides an elegant way of addressing both of these questions.
