Demonstration Part 1
One of the most important roles of vision is to detect the boundaries between objects. Our visual system has a number of characteristics that make edge detection easier. One such characteristic is lateral inhibition, which we will explore in this Discovery Lab demonstration.
Note the rectangles below. The one on the left appears almost black, and the one on the right is dark grey. Note how the colour of each rectangle is uniform across the whole rectangle. To see lateral inhibition in action, drag the rectangles so they fit inside the green dashed areas on the right.
