Instructions

In this experiment, you will be presented with 18 characters in rapid succession; each character will be presented for 20 ms and then hidden for 80 ms before being replaced by the next character. The entire presentation of letters is referred to as a ‘letter stream’.

  1. You have two tasks. The first is to determine if an ‘F’ or a ‘J’ was presented in the letter stream (F/J condition). The second task is to determine if an ‘X’ was shown in the letter stream or not (X present/absent condition). According to the attentional blink hypothesis, if the ‘F’ or ‘J’ is presented within 550 ms of the ‘X’ you will not be able to detect the X.
  2. Keep in mind which letters you saw; you will be asked at the end of each trial.
  3. After you respond, you will be given feedback as to whether your response was correct or incorrect.

You will complete 10 practice trials and 48 experimental trials. At the end, your responses on experimental trials will be shown. Press "Next" to begin your practice trials.
