Instructions

In this experiment, we will generate an estimate of your operation span as you complete arithmetic problems while maintaining a list of words in short-term memory. Your operating span will be calculated based on your memory performance for trials where you answered at least 85% of the arithmetic problems correctly. It is recommended that you state the arithmetic problems aloud when they are presented, and then read the word that is presented aloud as well. Try to maintain all words from a trial in short-term memory as you proceed through the math problems.

  1. On each trial you will be shown an arithmetic problem, such as (8/2) + 4 = 8, to which you must press ‘D’ if it is correct or ‘K’ if it is incorrect. Be sure to say the arithmetic problems and words aloud as you read them. Next, you will be shown a single-syllable high frequency word that you must commit to memory for later recall. You will complete 2-6 arithmetic problems per trial.
  2. Afterwards, you will be shown a list of words that you have seen during the trial. Click on the words in the order that they were presented to you.
  3. Once you have completed a trial, the next set of arithmetic problems will begin.

You will complete 3 practice trials and 12 experimental trials. At the end, your results will be shown. Click here to begin your practice trials. Press "Next" to begin.
